For decades, it has been a place where community, tradition and shared experiences meet.
Our roots
The Club was founded in the early 1960s, during a period of strong Spanish migration to Melbourne. As Spanish families settled in Fitzroy, the area around Johnston Street became a natural meeting point for the community.
With the support of the Spanish Government and the guidance of Padre Eduardo Sanchez, a building was established to serve as a cultural and social hub. Originally known as the Spanish Roman Catholic Mission, it soon evolved into the Hogar Español — today, The Spanish Club.
More than a club
From the beginning, The Spanish Club was more than a physical space.
It became a place to belong.
Here, people connected through language, food, music, art and celebrations. It was also where new generations could stay connected to Spanish heritage while growing up in Australia.
Over the years, the Club welcomed hundreds of members and became a central space for social events, fiestas and cultural activities — a true home away from home.
Culture, lived and shared
Today, The Spanish Club continues to evolve while remaining grounded in its origins.
It is a welcoming cultural space that celebrates Spanish culture in all its forms — from gastronomy and music to language, arts and community life.
Open to members and visitors from diverse backgrounds, the Club invites anyone with an interest in Spanish culture to connect, participate and share.
